What to do in Petaluma

Music to Your Ears

If it’s your first time in Petaluma, you may be surprised to see beautifully painted pianos on the sidewalks throughout the downtown. A kid bangs “Chopsticks” on one, a more seasoned musician plays Chopin on another. This free, live music is the brainchild of resident John “Petaluma Pete” Maher who commissioned local artists to paint pianos and place them around town for play and connection. Stop by the Visitor Center at the SMART station for a map of the 12 pianos—or better yet, go on your own scavenger hunt.

I Scream, You Scream…

Starting in the late 1800s, Petaluma was known for its dairy production. The fertile agricultural land with its convenient riverfront was perfect for producing and shipping dairy goods to San Francisco—creating prosperity and renown for Petaluma. The legacy of delicious, sweet dairy products continues. Try one (or all!) of our famous local creameries—Petaluma Creamery, LaLa’s Creamery, or organic Straus Family Creamery.
